COMMUNITY OPEN STUDIO
Peer critique, life drawing and open studio sessions for artists at every stage.
Community Open Studio is the FCA’s series of peer sessions: critiques led by experienced Signature members and jurors, life drawing, and themed studio evenings. They are a place to share work, get honest feedback and meet other artists, in person or online.
Places are limited, and most sessions take registration with a waitlist once they fill. Many are by donation, so cost need not be a barrier. Upcoming sessions are listed below; open one for its date, format and how to register.
What happens at a session
Peer critique. Bring one artwork and talk it through with other artists, led by an experienced juror and Signature member of the Federation. You get honest, constructive feedback on a finished piece or a work in progress, and you take part in the discussion of everyone else’s work, so plan to stay for the whole evening. Places are limited so that every artwork gets proper time. Most critiques meet in person at the Flex Space Studio; some run online.
Life drawing. Three hours of uninstructed drawing from a live model or performer, in a relaxed studio with light refreshments. Bring your favourite drawing materials; a few easels and basic supplies are on hand for anyone who needs them. Some evenings bring in guest performers and partner groups.
Themed evenings and the Pop Up Art Market. Seasonal studio nights, and a one-day market where independent artists and makers sell original work, ceramics, prints, jewellery and textiles. Donations at the market go back into Community Open Studio.
Every session is open to artists at every level, from a first sketchbook to Signature membership.
Where, what it costs, and booking
Where. The FCA Flex Space Studio, 1310 Johnston Street, Granville Island, Vancouver. Online sessions say so on their own page.
Cost. By donation, given at the door, so cost need not be a barrier. What you give keeps the program running.
Booking. Open a session below and reserve a spot. When a session fills, join the waitlist and you will hear if a place opens.
