Jose L. De Juan – 2026 August and September Window Gallery

August 1 to September 30, 2026

Ice in Vanier Park, oil, by Jose L. De Juan
VenueFederation Gallery window, 1241 Cartwright Street, Granville Island, Vancouver

From his native Madrid to Vancouver, Canada, Jose has chased the light with his brushes along with a career in animation. In that order of zeal. During his sparse free time, he is an avid plein-air painter. The immediacy and challenge of plein-air fit his nomadic life. He credits his artistic fine-tuning to the many amazing artists he has worked with in animation, as well as workshops with artists he admired like Ray Roberts or fellow Canadian Jennifer McChristian. A representational artist, Jose utilizes watercolor and oils and enjoys both mediums enormously. He is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and has exhibited widely. He believes every place provides a wealth of subject matter – if not always proper studio space. Vancouver is no exception. Jose aims to depict its sharp layering of the urban and natural textures and seasonal variation. Not to mention there’s plenty of rain to practice reflections! ‘I like to let the materials speak for themselves without much taming and pushing around, they are their own landscape. Light renders everything beautiful at least once. Just plant the easel and look around. Ultimately, my hope is that people will find joy in the light that surrounds us and trigger the luminosity within.’

General FCA submission guidelines
  • Your own work. Reference photos must be your own, or an amateur photographer’s used with their express consent. Stock images and photos by professional photographers are not allowed, even with permission or a paid licence; stock may only be used for anatomical study. Work made in a workshop or class cannot be entered, and neither can work that has already shown at Federation Gallery (chapter shows are fine).
  • One of a kind. Each piece must be one of a kind (prints in runs under 200) and finished to an archival standard. For mixed media, list every medium you used.
  • Your images and details. Photograph the work on its own: no background, frame or visible edges, straight and the right way up. Blurry or badly cropped images are declined without a refund. Give the medium and what it is on (canvas, paper, board or panel), and a one or two sentence description; it is printed on the gallery label. Nothing can be changed after the deadline.
  • Results. Each piece is Accepted (shown in the gallery and online), Recognized (shown online only) or Declined. There is no individual feedback, and the decision is final.
  • Once accepted. From the results email your work is under contract with the Federation: do not sell it elsewhere. Withdrawing or selling an accepted or recognized piece costs $100 and you cannot enter another Federation exhibition until the fee is paid.
  • Delivery and insurance. You pay shipping both ways, including customs and import fees; include a prepaid return waybill if you ship. The FCA does not insure artwork, in transit or on the wall. Late delivery is $50, work arriving early or left uncollected is $20 a piece per week, and work that is not wired properly is $20. Questions about shipping go to [email protected].
  • Entry fees. Entry fees are in Canadian dollars and are not refundable.
